SoRuraLL! – Rural Social Networking for Lifelong Learning

State-of-the-art widespread ICT networking tools and platforms have the potential to enable individuals to enhance their social networking, and in this way, potentially also enhance their learning. Groups at risk of exclusion may benefit from such technologies by getting the means for connecting themselves to public services, learning and civic engagement. The SoRuraLL! project aims to investigate the potential for enhanced lifelong learning offered by social networking tools and platforms to those living in geographically and socio-economically disadvantaged rural areas. Experimental learning approaches will be developed and implemented, examining the potential offered by these new trends and tools for the alleviation of the disadvantage suffered by such populations in Europe through the enhancement of opportunities for effective and meaningful lifelong learning. The project will bring together and further develop content, services, pedagogies and practices for social lifelong learning in rural areas, formulating specific scenarios of use of social networking tools and platforms which will be tested with real learners and their teachers in disadvantaged rural areas, and evaluated in terms of their impact on learning (self-learning, informal peer-learning, formal learning) and inclusion (development of e-skills and competences, linking up of learning communities, building up of new partnerships), consolidating thus an evidence base on the added-value and impact of social networking tools and platforms for rural learning, with a particular attention to institutional as well as pedagogical innovation and change. Several technological solutions will be tried including weblogs, wikis, podcasts, social software, virtual social sites, as well as tools such as mobile phones, and various usage schemes in the various sectors of lifelong learning, both formal (school, higher education, VET, adult education) and informal. Options for citizens’ access to the digital resources will also be examined, making use of good practice examples in areas of work such as the operation of telecenters in disadvantaged areas, the use of satellite broadband in remote rural areas, as well as other open and distant access approaches. A major outcome will be the promotion of a new vision for the use of social networking tools and platforms for learning in favour of the geographically, socio-economically and digitally disadvantaged, which will be proactively fed into policy making and education and training systems, aiming to achieve a multiplier effect across rural Europe. Overall, the innovation produced in the project will be carefully grounded on already existing knowledge and experiences, through an introductory comparative analysis of existing practices aiming to identify transferable good practice and success factors. A clear lifelong learning stance is taken, addressing multiple sectors including school education, higher education, adult education and professional training.

PREDIL - Promoting Equality in Digital Literacy

The ICT sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world economy, and it is essential that the EU builds on current excellence to become a dominant player, worldwide.  A skilled workforce is an essential prerequisite.  At present, the take up of ICT-related careers by women is very small; this has two important consequences.  First is the loss to the economy of the talents of a significant part of the potential workforce; second is the direct economic implications for women, many of whom are excluded from very well paid jobs. PREDIL’s central concern is on the harmonization of societal needs and pedagogical practices.  PREDIL is built on the premise that evidence based gender sensitive pedagogical methods and teaching approaches can be catalytic in increasing both the quality of educational provisions and pupils’ motivation in STEM related fields. In light of that the project’s goal is to increase understanding into the processes that underpin the great imbalance in take up of ICT by boys and girls at school and university level and on such a base to develop a coherent and comprehensive gender sensitive pedagogical strategy supported by a self reflective (diagnostic and self-observation tools) framework for in-service teachers in order to address and remedy the imbalance. The project  intends to  map (via a discursive approach) current teaching practices onto pupils’ preferences  with regard to  ICT applications in the curriculum  and in doing so develops  support  tools for teachers. In parallel mapped -via concept mapping  type of methods, will be pupils perceptions of STEM and ICT related fields, their instructional needs with respect to specific subjects, their personal attributions for success/failure in these subjects , and appreciation of ICT processes and tools. The process helps to deepen understanding into pupils' mental representations of/on learning technologies, as well as defining indicators on ICT and learning. This study facilitates the formulation of the framework for encouraging (and supporting) teachers to reflection on classroom practices.

Rural Wings

This is an international project which tries to open an internet door to the most isolated European populations. It is based on satellite telecommunications. It uses new technologies to create constructive learning contexts in rural areas of 13 European countries hitherto resistant to using ICT.

Rural Wings Spain, through the University of Barcelona, works with 15 schools in the development of educational tools which allow new forms of communication between towns and schools.

Study on use of information and communication technologies and the possibilities of empowerment for women

This research aims to understand how women use, live and relate to information and communication technologies (ICT). Previous investigations have demonstrated the existence of the digital divide in relation to gender: access, use and preferences of boys and girls in relation to ICT are different.

Our intention is to go one step further in exploring the digital divide. We do not intend to return to show that it exists, our goal is to know how the women use ICT, their relationship with them. This will outline proposals to empower women and provide ICT as an instrument itself, and últil required for different areas of your life.

Study of AIT uses and the empowerment possibilities in women

The objective is to know how women use, live and have a relation with information and communication technologies (ICT). Previous research has shown the existence of a digital divide in relation to gender: the access, use and preferences of boys and girls in relation to ICT are different. The aim is to advance a step in the study of the digital divide, by knowing how women use ICT and their relationship with it. It attempts to find proposals in order to make women feel ICT is a useful and necessary tool for their life.

ECNTLT: European Curricula on Technology for Teaching Languages

Considering the increasing role of ICT in all educational areas, language teachers need specific pedagogical knowledge as well as abilities to implement ICT. The main proposals of the European Curricula in New technologies and Language Teaching (Eurolingua ICT) are:

To let these language teachers of different European languages acquire the necessary knowledge and abilities to implement ICT effectively in their own classes

To train teachers specialized in teaching and implementing ICT for language teachers.

To produce a European curriculum in new technologies applied to language teaching to create internationally recognised certificates.
